Yes, when the method is used properly, it is 98% effective.

How will I know if I've inserted it correctly?

When the cap is correctly inserted you should not feel it.

In fact, neither you nor your partner should feel it.  If either of you can feel it, it would strongly suggest the cap is not properly positioned.

How long after inserting the cap does it take effect?

Immediately.  There is no need to wait for it to become effective.

Is it necessary to use a spermicide with the OVES cap?

The use of a spermicide is recommended with the cap. A small amount is placed in the bottom prior to insertion.  It is not necessary to reapply after sexual intercourse.  In fact, the published efficacy rates for the cap is those observed using spermicide on insertion only.

There is no evidence of this Silicone is used in many medical applications such as organ replacements, implants, vascular repair, etc.  It is an inert, stable and well tolerated material.

Yes, you can participate in sports, swim, bathe, practice your normal hygiene routine.

What are the contraindications to the OVES contraceptive cap?

There are rare contraindications to the use of caps:  cervical dysplasia, cystocele, rectocele and uterine prolapse.  Cervicovaginal infections are temporary contraindications.  Certain anatomical positions of the cervix (retroversion of the uterus) may make placement of the cap more difficult.

How do I choose the right size of OVES cap?

The prescribing physician decides what size is best suited during the initial examination.  The OVES cap comes in three sizes (26, 28 and 30mm) for the physician to choose from.  The 28mm size was designed to fit most women.  In the event it proves inadequate, particularly for certain multiparous women, the larger size may then be tried.  for certain nulliparous women the 26mm size can be used.  No subsequent verification of the cervical size is necessary unless there is an intercurrent event (after pregnancy, for example).

Is the OVES cap reusable?

No, the OVES cap should be removed after three consecutive days of use (or fewer depending on the needs of the patient) and discarded.

How long after intercourse should I wait before removal of the OVES cap?

6 hours.  This is the time required for any spermatozoa present in the vagina to be inactivated, thereby eliminating the risk of pregnancy.

Does the cap protect from STDs?

No, the OVES cap is a means of contraceptive only.
