The ASC Edge:
Superior EOS/ESD Protection
Electrical OverStress (EOS) and ElectroStatic (ESD) due to static, lightning, and power
supply disturbances are possible sources of false alarms or damage to motion detectors.
ADEMCO-designed PIRs incorporate multiple techniques to combat these problems that often
cause the need for service calls.
Any spot touched on a sensor is vulnerable to
ESD. Spark gaps can be found at every point that might be touched on the circuit board
during installation, including terminals, jumpers, DIP switches, and pots.
Special circuit layout techniques are utilized
to ensure that no discharge induced problems result from touching anywhere on the plastic
case.
Most sensors provide protection resistors in
series with the alarm reed relay. Even so, a surge of voltage from lightning can cause a
failure in the small, low wattage resistors. An open circuit in the loop is created and a
subsequent false alarm. Depending on the layout, the relay contact can still fuse even
with the protective resistor, creating a short that would go undetected--until an intruder
is not caught! ADEMCO sensors add Metal-Oxide-Varistors (MOVs) or transorbs to forestall
such occurrences. These electronic devices shunt the hazardous voltages to ground before
damage can occur.
